    Hi all,

I’m guessing that many of you saw that grades were submitted last night. If you didn’t get a grade that you feel reflects your participation and work in the class accurately, as always I’m happy to accept a revised assignment or discuss it briefly. I don’t have much time to change grades this semester though, so you’d need to do that…[Read more]

One more thing: Technically, papers are due Sunday by Midnight (Dec 7th). Realistically I won’t start reading at midnight, so they are due by the time I wake up. So running a bit past mid-night is fine. But don’t do that to yourself. Get it done earlier. You all have done the work, you’ve even presented on it. Just write it up and be done :-) The…[Read more]

    Hi class!

I want to thank you again for the amazing showing for our last class. There is a lot to be proud of, and I’ve really enjoyed telling my colleagues about what you all shared. Doug was touched that several of you drew on his presentation, and was excited by the design stories I shared back to him. We’d love to see your continued…[Read more]

    Hi Class,

    **Important Pizza Questions!!! **

But first…. I just sent an invite to a shared Google Drive folder for the Ignite presentations. Please upload your presentation ahead of class tomorrow.

I put together a test Google Presentation with simple instructions on how to setup the proper auto-transition timing. You can find it in the shared…[Read more]

    Hi class,

There are two papers for tomorrow. These were listed, but hard to find given a failure in my formatting.

    See the updates at http://edt460-2014-gamestechsociety.cgicourses.org/course-schedule/quest-4-the-extension/

Focus on the Wadding piece that Patrick will be presenting tomorrow.

I hope your playtests, and papers are coming along…[Read more]

    Hi Class,

A reminder: we will be meeting in the Innovation Lab to start. The first 30 minutes are a good time to go over balsamiq questions, discuss game ideas, and do other collaborative work. Around 5pm we will move to the conference room to discuss the readings.
I am beginning to work through the paper grading, and hope to have everything back…[Read more]

    Hi Class,

    Due tonight by midnight: http://goo.gl/forms/B0MDbtvBkl

I need this data in order to give you keycard access to the Innovation Lab, which you may find increasingly relevant for the remainder of the class as you develop your games.

    best,

    Adam

    Hi Class,

Just a reminder: Class is now held in the Innovation Lab and associated conference room. These are Farmer Education Building 144 & 146 respectively (i.e., where we met last time, two weeks ago).

    Best,

    Adam

Leaving it on the Balsamiq site is fine. They can all be viewed/shared there.

    Hi Class,

In response to yesterday’s email, some of you created or uploaded files for your studio partners. The problem is that if they don’t own the document, they don’t get notification about comments, and edits. So, please let them be responsible for their own document management. If someone in your studio fails to follow guidelines for…[Read more]

    Hi Class,

We are coming up on the deadline for the final versions of this paper. Because I caught a flu last weekend that put me behind all week I didn’t have a chance to provide feedback on the drafts that were due last Tuesday yet. I’m working on them now.

I do notice that some of you are not following the instructions for the assignment. I…[Read more]

Another play & think aloud is due this week, the focus this time being on the ideological issues, culture around the game, and expanding any issues from the first bit of writing. So at this point 2 hrs of play should be logged in order to make sure you have sufficient experience with the game to experience, reflect, and deconstruct the game and…[Read more]

    Hi Class,

The Norman reading for the week should be Chapters 1, 2, & 4. The 4th chapter is where the design ideas really get developed in concrete terms. Approach this book as a fast, light read. It can be dense, but just get a sense of what Norman is discussing. Try to come to class with ideas of what he is discussing.

    Cassandra is presenting…[Read more]

    Hi Class,

I am just getting to doing reviews right now. If you uploaded a word document or pdf, please dump that text into a google doc that you create in the folder. The point of using the google drive is that with google docs when someone comments on your text you will get notifications, and it supports discussion in those comments. No other…[Read more]

    • Hi Adam, just want to double check if there is a fixed due date for this week? Are we expected to add the ideological analysis to the paper before next class, or is that incorporated into the 10/14 due date since people were wanting clarity on the Bogost article? Thanks!

      Everett & Watkins

It appears that the authors’ goal is simply to suggest games as a site for cultural research on race, and I would say they succeed at that. But as cultural critics themselves? Not so much. It’s interesting to me that critiques about how some aspect of popular culture “marginalizes” women, rarely flip the model to look at how…[Read more]

We have heard the video games are not good for teaching content. They are good at giving experiences that can teach you. By integrating youth into these environments that teach stereotypical “ghetto behavior” we are perpetuating these ideals. Is that what we were suppose to grab from this article?

    • Everett and Watkins:
When they discuss the idea of learning race they mention a couple of other authors that say we need games that tell and do, can someone give me an example of the type of game they are talking about? Does that type of game they discuss even exist yet?
I also have to say that when it comes to GTA, being a frequent spectator to…[Read more]

    • Cassel:
I don’t think it is a matter of designing games for girls or games for boys. People make it to target a certain audience. What we should care about is the view on video games and technology itself, people should know that computers are more than a tool to complete their work. How can we do that? However, this article is quite dated and…[Read more]

    • Cassel:
I think that games definitely do aim either toward girls or boys. With the vast majority focused toward boys. In my opinion the only true exception to this is nintendo who will make games that both genders will can play comfortably. The majority of the characters are male but there are a large percentage of female characters. Most of those…[Read more]

    • Both of these article’s topics are in my interest area.

Cassell, I like how the article talked about the history of genderization. I disagree with Janet and Torrie on so much has changed, it hasn’t from when I was around. However, my time range of reference is different from their’s.

Not a whole lot has changed, it’s became more grey or muddy,…[Read more]

      • I remember this game and played awhile ago: Lim – http://www.freeindiegam.es/2012/09/lim-merritt-kopas/

It’s a game where you try to blend in with other squares so you don’t get knocked out of the maze (goal: complete the maze). I remember people using it to talk and think about fitting into different cultures, race, and gender groups when you’re not.

    • Cassel:
One piece of information I found particularly interesting in the Cassel article was how the Barbie Fashion Design game was the highest selling children’s game in history at the time. I find it baffling how the female market is continually overlooked or blatantly ignored. Even when Laura Croft was finally introduced, the physical a…[Read more]

    • Cassell: The history of genderization in video games is interesting. There’s no doubt that it occurred when video games were just starting to be created and marketed, but in regard to the character design, it reflected both the gamer makeup and the primitive technology that developers had access to. The characters often had to have overdeveloped…[Read more]

    • Both of these articles were interesting to me, and I do think they have some relevance today. In fact, I think people have become more vocal about making changes to include a diverse range of lead characters for players to relate to. Perhaps because a more diverse group of people are entering the game developing field. I think what factors into…[Read more]

Everett and Watkins: For the majority of the article, the authors blasted GTA how its violence and racial stereotyping are bad for kids. In these readings–and every week going forward–consider the question, “How is this useful to me, and what I want to accomplish?”

I know the Barab paper is complex, but you should approach it as a methodological discussion. Read the first paragraph a few times to get a sense of what the paper is really about.

In the Steinkhuler paper, consider…[Read more]
