  • First paragraph of my paper:
This paper details my process of designing a game I call Bad Company. It is a game in which each player represents a small business or company, trying to reach a threshold of success. In this case, 5 points represents that threshold. Players use cards that will allow them to either “Collaborate” with another com…[Read more]

Here’s my paper setup for my game ‘Bad Company’:

-Discuss the selection of value (Integrity) and what it means to me

-Inspiration for integrity game: I experienced an interesting interaction between a business I worked for and a company that they collaborated/competed with. If one company did something wrong, the other could “reserve” it as an…[Read more]

Sam, I think that is good motivation. If it is successful, it’d be a great application tool for people to understand conservation and make them think of ways to cut down on water usage.

I like it, Janet. I’m excited to hear your ideas. Do you know what direction you are going for your game?

I think I will base mine on an interesting interaction I learned about between two companies: a wholesaler and a service company that buys/uses the wholesale supplies. The wholesaler basically tried to get away with providing lower quality…[Read more]

For my game it’s related to stuff I teach. People always say they want to be in a relationship with someone “honest,” but then they want to wiggle around the truth themselves “so they don’t hurt the other person’s feelings.”

I like your idea about using a corporate frame. It gives you a lot of possible directions and complications — changes…[Read more]

    • I think it’s a good idea. Just make sure it’s not overly competitive like we learned in class on Tuesday too much is can cause social problems for the players.

Thanks, Andrew. I’m glad I could explain the lore in such a way that a non-player could understand. I’ll try to carry that throughout the rest of my paper.

Saw this article as well. I have not watched the talks Anita gives, but a lot of people in the comment section dismissed the nature of the threats and instead commented that Anita is the worst kind of feminist/is a terrible person, etc. when she is voicing a perspective that -while might be extreme in comparison to some- obviously resonate with…[Read more]

Appreciate it, Janet! I will implement both your critique and Adam’s when I’m composing my final draft!

    • Hi Janelle, I really liked the content of your paper. I’ve never played Mass Effect before but I felt like I fully understood the game mechanics you were explaining and how it related to your paper. I really liked how you expanded on how the experience reflected certain beliefs and such in real life.

Hi Janet, this is a really engaging start. I don’t know anything about this game, so you might choose to include a brief (2-or-so sentence) explanation of the game itself, that would help! (my opinion)
I like your setup, as well. It’s different from the papers I have seen and written, and I think I might take note from your writing style, and how…[Read more]

    • Thanks, Janelle. That’s very helpful as well. I still need to find some outside player-participation response to the game (haven’t searched yet) so that might give me some ideas on how best to summarize what it’s about. I don’t think two hours of play has given me a very clear idea!

      • Janet I love the way your paper is organized. I think your paper will definitely benefit from the outside player-participation response. You did a great job of explaining Civilization 5 for such a short time of playing. It’s a very deep and complex game. I’m excited to see how it all comes together.

  • This includes all of the themes I will explore for the Mass Effect game. It’s on the short side right now, but all feedback is welcome!

    • Hey Janelle!

You have lots of great “critique” in here – especially relating things to the readings! Good analysis overall.

A couple of suggestions–he has a very specific template for the order of this paper. That will help you give structure to yours, which right now wanders around a little bit (but I know it’s a draft and that’s to be…[Read more]

  • Here is what I have so far. I have not combined it with my previous analysis, but this topic is very involved and will need some fleshing out. Any suggestions of how to improve, tie in, or develop real-world connections would be great!

Hey everyone, should we have Sunday night be our “due date” for the 2nd draft of our game analysis (where we are including the ideological elements found in our games)? Then we can give each other feedback Monday/Tuesday before class.

  • Janelle Wilke posted a new activity comment 4 years, 1 month ago

Hi Adam, just want to double check if there is a fixed due date for this week? Are we expected to add the ideological analysis to the paper before next class, or is that incorporated into the 10/14 due date since people were wanting clarity on the Bogost article? Thanks!

    • Another play & think aloud is due this week, the focus this time being on the ideological issues, culture around the game, and expanding any issues from the first bit of writing. So at this point 2 hrs of play should be logged in order to make sure you have sufficient experience with the game to experience, reflect, and deconstruct the game and…[Read more]

Both of these articles were interesting to me, and I do think they have some relevance today. In fact, I think people have become more vocal about making changes to include a diverse range of lead characters for players to relate to. Perhaps because a more diverse group of people are entering the game developing field. I think what factors into…[Read more]

If you are turning in this PDF as your final doc, I can easily add that link via Photoshop for you. Let me know if that’s the case!

    • I emailed it in last night. Thanks for offering. I’m hoping that’s the end of this assignment, so I don’t have to redo it. I still have all the text, fortunately.

      Thanks again!

This is great, Janet. Only thing I see that could be an issue is that under the ‘Theme’ section, there is no link after “For more information, go here…” I really liked your bonus challenge! I think it is a great & easy way to get players to think about traits and how they’ll make an appearance here and there.

    • Thanks, Janelle! I liked what you used as the “For more information…” I really didn’t have any idea what should go there.

Hi Patrick, this is showing up fine on my computer. A few notes: Might want to change the photo. Also, you should run the doc through spellcheck, there are a few errors popping up (i.e. ‘Involvment–>Involvement). In the ‘Why Use This Guide’ section, the first sentence is duplicated. Overall, I only see some technical errors. Your guide ties in…[Read more]

    • I’m glad it’s working for you, Janelle. I still get just the template.
I use Open Office at home. I’ll try to open it on my office computer at school on Tuesday, just to confirm if my home system is the problem. Sorry I’m not contributing, Patrick!

    • I couldn’t figure out how to change the picture. It wouldn’t let me.

      • Changing the picture is tricky. In order to change it, you need to “Unprotect” the document (under the tools menu), then change the image, then “Protect” the document (select the “forms” option). It isn’t required to do this though.
